(Redirected from Free writing)
‘…Writing performed without conscious thought or deliberation, typically by means of spontaneous free association or as a medium for spirits or psychic forces…’
Free writing exercises penned while studying for my degree, and at writer’s retreats that I have participated in, have contributed a great deal to my work. Some have been easily adapted after work-shopping and editing, and suited the multi-linear composition, such as the one I am using in the construction of my trilogy. One-line ‘starters’ have resulted in fully detailed chapters.
Free writing takes me to surprising and unexpected destinations where I never intended to be. This, in turn has brought up characters and events that I never intended to include originally and added a freshness to my work.
With each session in the Lucca workshops, we will begin with a timed free-writing exercise. In these exercises I will give you a prompt – usually a first line to get you started. The purpose of free-writing is to get the juices flowing, with little consideration for grammatical correctness, format or formality. All of these things can be tidied up and edited at a later moment if desired.
Free-writing is very much like a rapid sketch, expressive, gestural, often with spectacular results. If you decide that you don’t want to develop your free-writing piece any further, it is still very much a worthwhile practice as you will find it will loosen you up and relaxes your ‘voice’ as we work on our other pieces throughout the day.
The sub-conscious voice can speak volumes, when given permission and unleashed.
Come join us in Lovely Lucca this year in November….
